Raptor Education

Raptor Education

I spent a recent morning with the Earth Conservation Corps, a local DC organization responsible for restoring the Anacostia River and surrounding habitats, and re-introducing bald eagles to the city more than twenty years ago. Raptor conservation is a big part of ECC's work, and with the support of the National Park Trust, they're able to bring their raptor educational program to students all over the metro area, including the boys of St. Ignatius Loyola Academy in Baltimore, MD.

Anniversary of the Women's March

Anniversary of the Women's March

I wasn’t able to attend this year’s Women’s March on Washington, but I did take some time to reflect on my experience at last year’s march. I was there to participate, not to photograph; but I have always found it challenging to find the right balance between photo documenting these moments in life (which is my natural inclination), and putting the camera down to live in the moment. Youth Empowerment Project

Youth Empowerment Project

Looking back on the first year of my business, there's one experience that comes to mind as one of the most memorable of my professional life. I had the privilege of photographing the Youth Empowerment Project through Momenta’s Project: New Orleans workshop. YEP engages people of all ages through community-based education, mentoring and employment readiness programs — children whose lives have been directly affected by substance abuse, youth who live in at-risk communities, young adults transitioning out of the juvenile detention system, even a grandmother working toward her high school equivalency diploma. Crossway Community

Crossway Community

Crossway is a special place. Through multiple programs and secure living facilities — including its Family Leadership Academy, Intergenerational Learning Center and an on-site Montessori school — Crossway provides complete wrap-around support to multiple generations to prevent poverty and help families thrive. I’ve made several visits to Crossway over the past few months, and each time have been amazed at the impact of its programs and sense of community. Its founder, Kathleen Guinan, is a true visionary and inspiration.

The Big Easy

The Big Easy

New Orleans is a melting pot of culture, tradition, language, and arts of all kinds (music, visual, culinary… the list is infinite!). I spent just short of a week in this beautiful, vibrant city — during the French Quarter Festival no less — attending the Momenta: Project New Orleans workshop. Somewhere between assignments, editing, and lectures, I managed to squeeze in a few free hours to wander the city with my camera in hand. Have you ever been in the exact right place at the exact right time? That’s what happened when I stumbled upon the band Tuba Skinny beginning to set up for an impromptu performance on the corner of Toulouse and Chartres Streets. (They’re incredible by the way.) Laissez les bons temps rouler!
